Atlas Outfitting is Casting into Fall!
Coming into Fall, September and October are the last two months of fishing season! If you’re not quite ready for summer to end and want to squeeze in one more trip on the water, now’s the time to call.
September is all about transition — cooler mornings, shorter days and trout shifting into their fall patterns. If you’re fishing this month, be sure to pack warm layers and rain gear. This is an incredibly beautiful and peaceful time of year to be outdoors. With the summer crowd gone and the leaves starting to glow yellow and orange, the atmosphere on the water is incredibly serene.
Fishing Report:
Montana rivers are starting to go off Hoot Owl restrictions, which means longer fishing days again.
Brown Trout are changing colors during this pre-spawn period. You’ll see them transitioning from their subtle summer tan to vibrant golds and fiery orange with sharper spotted markings. The best part? They’re hungry.
We’re fishing all the fall color flies — olive, orange, brown and black — along with the last of the hoppers, BWO’s, October caddis, beads, sculpins, worms, and leeches. Streamers and nymphs are producing consistently, while dries are more hatch and weather dependent this time of year.
Shoulder season fisheries are shining right now: the Lower Madison, Bitterroot, Clark Fork and Missouri are all fishing great.
Cast & Blast Season!
October means Cast and Blast season! This is probably our favorite fall combo: fishing for trout while floating the river and hunting waterfowl from the boat. Yes, you heard that right. This is about as “Montana Fall” as it gets! We have partnered with a few of our Montana Hunting Outfitter buddies and will be guiding these trips this fall. Reach out if you’re interested!
